Daal Tadka – My Winter Daal

A Healthy and Delicious Winter daal ..

Always my comfort food – Daal.

Pigeon peas / tur daal / arhar daal

With the bad cold outside and me down with bad throat, I just yearned for a bowl of Daal but, wanted something strong in it. So, I packed up my plain daal with a tadka of only these spices – ginger , garlic and pepper in ghee.

Ginger , garlic and pepper made a lot of difference to tadka. If you feel that peppercorns would not feel so good when you have to chew it so, just freshly grind them in powder just before making this dish. Same can be done for ginger and garlic .. just make a paste of it. But be careful not to burn it while tadka. I really wanted to chew them all so kept it whole. Also this daal when we consumed it the next day (with overnight in refrigerator) , the flavour of spices made it taste much stronger and no doubt delicious 🙂

Here’s my recipe, try it out.

Daal cooked in pressure cooker

Giving tadka

Recipe

Ingredients Used ?

1/2 cup Tur Daal/ Arhar Daal / Pigeon Peas
1 tbsp black peppercorns coarsely broken
1/2 inch ginger chopped in very small cubes
2 big garlic cloves chopped in very small cubes
1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp ghee

How I Prepared It?

Cook daal in a pressure cooker alongwith turmeric and half of asafoetida. Once its cooked and the pressure has been released from the cooker, mix in salt and set aside in a serving bowl.

In a tadka pan, heat ghee add remaining of hing, ginger , garlic and peppercorns and pour this over your bowl of daal.

Winter Daal is ready.
